Composée de 400 habitants à cette date, la population va connaître un fort accroissement, passant de 800 en 1879 à 3 300 en 1979. Mais durement frappée par la crise économique (fermeture des entrepôts S.N.C.F. et de l’unité de stockage des Coops. de Lorraine), la population va connaître un assez fort fléchissement et osciller vers les 3 500 habitants, répartis sur une superficie territoriale de 740 hectares.
Toutefois, il faut savoir que le territoire de la commune est beaucoup moins important de nos jours que par le passé. En effet, on l’a diminué de près de moitié en érigeant en commune distincte Saint-Marceau, autrement dit Saint-Marcel-Sur-Le-Mont, qui était au secours de Villers et, de plus, on lui a emprunté toute la rive droite de la Vence pour en former le ban de La Francheville, notamment le bois de la Dame.
