L’Hôpital Européen est né le 19 aout 2013 de la fusion des hôpitaux Ambroise Paré et Paul Desbief, deux établissements de santé réputés pour la qualité des soins et des relations humaines.

L'Hôpital Européen est géré par la Fondation Hôpital Ambroise Paré. Il s'agit d'un établissement de santé privé à but non lucratif. La Fondation a été reconnue d'utilité publique le 6 mars 1875. Il s'agit donc de l'un des plus anciens hôpitaux marseillais. Né d'une initiative privée au profil des plus démunis, il a depuis développé son action en médecine et en chirurgie pour devenir un établissement médical de référence.
Construit à l'initiative de la Fondation Ambroise Paré et des pouvoirs publics, il répond à une double mission : d'une part réduire le déséquilibre de l'offre de soins à Marseille, d'autre part créer un équipement collectif d'intérêt général au cœur d'Euroméditerranée.
Avec une capacité d’accueil de 660 lits et places, plus de 1400 salariés et 350 médecins libéraux, l’Hôpital Européen s’appuie sur un projet médical ambitieux dont les jalons ont été posés par les Hôpitaux Ambroise Paré et Paul Desbief.
