Créé en 1795, l’Institut de France a pour mission de proposer aux cinq Académies (française, inscriptions et belles-lettres, sciences, beaux-arts, sciences morales et politiques) un cadre harmonieux pour travailler au perfectionnement des lettres, des sciences et des arts, à titre non lucratif. Grand mécène, il encourage la recherche et soutient la création à travers la remise de prix, de bourses et de subventions (plus de 23 millions d’euros distribués chaque année par le biais de ses fondations abritées). Placé sous la protection du président de la République, il est également le gardien d'un important patrimoine, à commencer par le Palais du quai de Conti, quatre bibliothèques dont la bibliothèque Mazarine, ou encore de nombreuses demeures et collections qui lui ont été léguées depuis la fin du XIXe siècle. Parmi elles se trouvent le château de Chantilly, l’abbaye de Chaalis, le musée Jacquemart-André, le château de Langeais, le manoir de Kerazan ou encore la villa Kérylos.
