Maintain and ensure the proper functioning of the National Center for Crisis Situations and Special Communications of the Government Presidency, as well as protecting its documentation.
Direct and coordinate the completion of the crisis management exercises planned by the department, as well as those whose address is required.
Contribute to the elaboration, maintenance and update of contingency plans and analyze the crisis scenarios in coordination with the competent bodies.

El Departamento de Seguridad Nacional es el órgano de asesoramiento al Presidente del Gobierno en materia de Seguridad Nacional y asume las funciones de Secretaría Técnica y órgano de trabajo permanente del Consejo de Seguridad Nacional. Como órgano de asesoramiento al Presidente del Gobierno, le corresponde brindar el apoyo inmediato, óptimo e integral en materia de Seguridad Nacional para la adecuada toma de decisiones, así como, además, entre otras funciones:
Elaborar estudios e informes sobre Seguridad Nacional, sin perjuicio de las funciones que correspondan a otros órganos.
Realizar la alerta temprana y el seguimiento de los riesgos, amenazas y situaciones de crisis en coordinación con los órganos y autoridades competentes.
Asistir al Director del Gabinete de la Presidencia del Gobierno en su condición de Secretario del Consejo de Seguridad Nacional así como representar al Gabinete de la Presidencia del Gobierno en el ámbito de la Seguridad Nacional.
Analizar la evolución de los riesgos y amenazas y de sus potenciadores.
Contribuir a la elaboración de propuestas normativas sobre Seguridad Nacional.
En el ámbito de la gestión de situaciones de crisis, aporta la visión integral y transversal de la gestión de crisis y apoya la actividad que despliega el Comité Especializado en la materia, correspondiéndole, además, entre otras funciones:
Proporcionar el apoyo y la coordinación adecuada en la gestión de situaciones de crisis.
Mantener y asegurar el adecuado funcionamiento del Centro Nacional de Conducción de Situaciones de Crisis y las comunicaciones especiales de la Presidencia del Gobierno, así como proteger su documentación.
Dirigir y coordinar la realización de los ejercicios de gestión de crisis planificados por el Departamento, así como aquéllos cuya dirección le sea requerida.
Contribuir a la elaboración, mantenimiento y actualización de los planes de contingencia y analizar los escenarios de crisis en coordinación con los órganos competentes.
