    İstanbul Gaz Dağıtım Sanayi ve Ticaret Anonim Şirketi (İGDAŞ), 25 Aralık 1986 tarihinde İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi, İETT ve bazı iştiraklerin katılımıyla kuruldu. İstanbul’u kirli havadan kurtarmak amacıyla kurulan İGDAŞ, şehrin yakıt ihtiyacını, çevre ve insan sağlığına en uygun ve en ekonomik enerji kaynağı olan doğal gaz ile karşılamaya başladı.
    Bu karara istinaden İstanbul'da İETT bünyesinde fizibilite çalışmaları başlatıldı ve alınan teklifler incelendikten sonra, konunun ülkemizde yeni olması sebebiyle Mayıs 1987’de, İstanbul doğal gaz sisteminin malzeme ve işçiliği Fransız SAE firması ile Alarko konsorsiyumuna ihale edildi. 1989 yılında başlanan çalışmalar neticesinde abonelere ilk doğal gaz Kadıköy ilçesinde, Ocak 1992’de verildi.     İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi, bilinen en temiz fosil yakıt olması ve şehrin hava kirliliğinin azaltılmasına yapacağı olumlu katkı nedeniyle doğal gaz kullanımını yaygınlaştırmayı öncelikli hedef olarak belirledi.
    İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi Çevre Koruma ve Kontrol Müdürlüğü tarafından, doğal gazın öncelikle hava kirliliğinin yoğun olduğu bölgelerde kullanılmasını sağlamak amacıyla, 1995 yılında Y.T.Ü. İnşaat Fakültesi Çevre Mühendisliği Bölümü’ne “İstanbul’da Hava Kirliliği Haritasının Çıkarılması ve Doğal Gaz Kullanımına Öncelik Verilecek Bölgelerin Belirlenmesi Araştırma Projesi” çalışması yaptırıldı. Bu proje ile elde edilen bilgilere göre hava kirliliğinin yoğun olduğu bölgeler belirlenerek öncelikle bu yerlere doğal gazın ulaştırılması sağlandı.
    Ardından yatırımlara hız verildi ve halkımız doğal gaz kullanımı konusunda bilinçlendirildi.
    İstanbul halkına en iyi şekilde hizmet vermek için yapılan çalışmalar, İGDAŞ’ın dünya standartlarını yakalamasını sağladı.
