📖 Looking for recommendations regarding how financial professionals can address the existing ESG data challenges?

The outcome report of the LSFI ESG Data Working Group, developed by the working group members, analyses the current challenges and includes recommendations specific to each asset class for financial practitioners, policymakers, and the LSFI. It also features a questionnaire to be used by financial professionals dealing with data providers.

In general, the working group identified that all asset classes currently face challenges related to:
• Reliability of data;
• Absence of global standards and thus difficulties in ensuring comparability and consistency;
• Lack of transparency, especially associated with methodology opaqueness;
• Cost issues related to acquiring the data but also the technology required and companies’ reporting;
• Complexity and rapid regulatory changes.

🎤 The transition towards sustainable finance and addressing the challenges it presents requires collaboration across sectors and disciplines. In particular, integrating scientific research with sustainable finance practices and bridging existing gaps is essential.

This month, we interviewed Andrew Ferrone, Deputy Director for Climate and Sustainable Development at the Luxembourg Ministère de l'Environnement, du Climat et de la Biodiversité and Chair of the LSFI Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). We discussed the link between science and sustainable finance, the objectives of the SAB, how scientists and financial professionals can collaborate more effectively to drive sustainability, and the biggest challenges in aligning the financial sector with the latest scientific understanding of sustainability-related topics.
