Als Deutschlands zentrale Umweltbehörde kümmern wir uns darum, dass es in Deutschland eine gesunde Umwelt gibt, in der Menschen so weit wie möglich vor schädlichen Umwelteinwirkungen, wie Schadstoffen in Luft oder Wasser, geschützt leben können. Unsere Themenpalette ist breit – von der Abfallvermeidung über den Klimaschutz bis zur Zulassung von Pflanzenschutzmitteln.
Daten über den Zustand der Umwelt zu erheben, Zusammenhänge zu erforschen, Prognosen für die Zukunft zu erstellen und mit diesem Wissen die Bundesregierung, wie etwa das Bundesumweltministerium, für ihre Politik zu beraten, ist unser Auftrag. Aber auch die Öffentlichkeit in Umweltfragen zu informieren und für Ihre Fragen da zu sein, gehört zu unseren Aufgaben. Darüber hinaus vollziehen wir Umweltgesetze, setzen sie also in der Praxis um. Dazu forschen die Fachleute des Amtes in eigenen Laboren und vergeben Forschungsaufträge an wissenschaftliche Einrichtungen und Institute im In- und Ausland. Darüber hinaus sind wir Partner und Kontaktstelle Deutschlands zu zahlreichen internationalen Einrichtungen, wie etwa der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO).
