La FHP rassemble plus de 1 030 cliniques et hôpitaux privés qui assurent chaque année la prise en charge de 9 millions de patients. Environ 160 000 salariés (personnels de soins, administratifs et techniciens) travaillent dans les établissements de santé privés et 40 000 médecins y exercent.
La FHP assume un double rôle.
En aval, elle informe, conseille et assiste ses adhérents en matière économique, juridique et sociale.
En amont, elle représente les cliniques et hôpitaux privés auprès des tutelles, du ministère et des syndicats de salariés de la branche. La FHP développe aussi des actions pour mieux faire connaître auprès du grand public la qualité de la prise en charge et leur rôle essentiel au sein du système de santé français.
