To enterprise means to transform individual strengths into an unstoppable force for change.

Addie Wyatt and Dorothy Height worked to redefine women’s roles within the labor movement.

Wyatt was elected the first female president of the of United Packinghouse Workers of America in 1954. She worked tirelessly to improve the lives of women in the workforce, founding the Coalition of Labor Union Women and serving as a founding member of the National Organization of Women. In 1984, Wyatt retired as Vice President of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union.

Height was appointed President of the National Council of Negro Women in 1957, a role she held for 40 years. During the 1960s and 1970s, she served on the President’s Committee on the Employment of the Handicapped and the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women.

Wyatt and Height recognized the intersectionality of gender and race and worked to improve the lives of all female workers. Through their efforts and leadership, they were able to transform individual strengths into an unstoppable force for change.

AGS is recognizing the lasting impact of Black Americans in the workforce in honor of this year’s theme for Black History Month, “African Americans and Labor.”
