Le général COMLE est le conseiller technique du CEMAT pour l'ensemble des questions spécifiques à la Légion étrangère. Il est le garant de la cohésion et de la cohérence de la Légion comme force combattante au service de la France. Pour accomplir cette mission, le général dispose d'un Etat-major, échelon de synthèse et de conception, et de trois régiments d’exécution (1RE, 4RE et GRLE) qui lui permettent de mettre en oeuvre l'ensemble de ses prérogatives.
