Part of the Directorate General for Enterprise (DGE), which itselfreports to the Ministry for the Economy and Finance, The French Digital Agency is a “department with national scope”, an administrative category that, due to its specific tasks and unique organisation, differs from traditional, centralised departments.
Created in 2015, the Agency’s initiatives are based on three main, complementary lines, including some that are already part of well-established public policies :
• The French Very High-Speed Broadband Plan seeks to ensure that the entire country is covered by cutting-edge digital infrastructure, the digital transition’s backbone. Specifically, the Plan calls for bringing very high-speed broadband service to every home, business and government office in France by 2022,
• The French Tech Initiative aims at fostering the growth of French start-ups and support them into becoming international champions,
• The Digital Society Programme supports projects to make digital culture more widespread, allowing citizens to seize the opportunities brought about by the digital transformation.

Crée en 2015, l'Agence du Numérique avait pour mission d'impulser et de soutenir des actions préparant la société française aux révolutions numériques. Elle intervenait toujours en soutien à des écosystèmes territoriaux associant acteurs publics et privés (collectivités publiques, réseaux d'entreprises, associations, acteurs de la médiation numérique, particuliers, etc.) avec un rôle d'animation et de soutien à des initiatives locales.
Pour atteindre cet objectif, l'Agence du Numérique pilotait 4 politiques publiques complémentaires (toujours existants) :
- Le Programme France Très Haut Débit vise à déployer de nouvelles infrastructures numériques pour apporter un accès à un Internet très haut débit sur l'ensemble du territoire.
- Le Programme France Mobile vise au respect des objectifs gouvernementaux en terme de téléphonie mobile et à généraliser la 4G sur le territoire.
- Le Programme Société Numérique met en œuvre un programme d'actions pour favoriser l'autonomie et la capacité de tous à saisir les opportunités du numérique, et pour accompagner la transition des territoires.
- L'Initiative French Tech soutient la croissance des startups en France et à l'international.
