Le Conseil National des Barreaux (CNB), établissement d'utilité publique doté de la personnalité morale, est l'organisation nationale qui représente l'ensemble des 77 598 avocats inscrits en France.
Le CNB a reçu de la loi des missions très spécifiques :
- représentation de la profession, en France et à l'étranger ;
- unification des règles et usages de la profession ;
- formation professionnelle ;
- admission des avocats étrangers.
• Le CNB comprend 80 membres élus pour trois ans (48 avocats pour la circonscription nationale, 32 pour la circonscription de Paris) et deux vice-présidents de droit, le Bâtonnier du barreau de Paris et le Président de la Conférence des Bâtonniers en exercice.
• Il comprend également un bureau composé de 11 membres: 9 membres élus par l’assemblée générale auxquels s'ajoutent le président de la Conférence des bâtonniers et le bâtonnier de l’ordre des avocats au barreau de Paris.
Le président du CNB a qualité pour agir en son nom dans tous les actes de la vie civile, ester en justice, et, plus généralement, le représenter auprès des pouvoirs publics, des autres professions et des tiers.
Dans le cadre de sa mission, le CNB détermine ses orientations en assemblée générale et propose aux pouvoirs publics toutes évolutions qui lui paraissent utiles ou nécessaires.
