La formation et la préparation des sportifs de haut niveau, en liaison avec les fédérations sportives et dans le respect du double projet : la recherche de l’excellence sportive et celle de la réussite, scolaire, universitaire ou professionnelle, du (de la) sportif(ve) ;
L’animation du réseau national du sport de haut niveau, étendu aux établissements nationaux du ministère et aux structures regroupées au sein des filières d’accès au sport de haut niveau ;
La formation initiale et continue des acteurs du développement du sport, notamment les équipes d’encadrement des fédérations sportives dont une discipline au moins est reconnue de haut niveau ;
La délivrance de titres propres et des diplômes nationaux pour lesquels l’INSEP aura été habilité par le ministre chargé des sports ou le ministre chargé de l’enseignement supérieur ;
La contribution à la recherche scientifique, médicale et technologique dans le domaine des activités physiques et sportives, la production et la diffusion de la connaissance en matière de sport de haut niveau et la valorisation de ses ressources documentaires ;
La conduite d’actions de relations internationales et de coopération, ainsi que la collaboration avec des institutions françaises et étrangères.
