The research at the Laboratoire Albert Fert cover various areas of condensed matter physics, including spintronics, oxide electronics, superconductivity and, more recently, neuromorphic physic. On these topics, the laboratory is often at the forefront in France and internationally. The aim of this fundamental research is to develop applications and stimulate innovation in the field of information and communication technologies, unconventional approaches to computing and beyond CMOS logic, and quantum technologies. The Laboratoire Albert Fert is a joint research unit (UMR-137) under the supervision of CNRS and THALES, and with the Université Paris Saclay since 2020. It is located on the Thales Research&Technology site in Palaiseau (France). The missions were defined jointly when the laboratory was created in January 1995 by the CNRS institutes and the technical management of THALES, and the research themes are updated each time the unit is renewed. The research programmes are developed with the following generic objectives in mind: • To develop technical innovation and basic research in the research areas studied • To enable the identification of research sectors with technological applications in the medium or long term. • To strengthen the link between fundamental and applied research by developing collaborations with industrial and academic partners. • To optimize existing technological systems through basic research.
