Le premier club a été fondé à Paris en 1932 à la suite d'un voyage de familiarisation en Scandinavie. Deux ans plus tard, l'Association internationale des Skål Clubs a vu le jour sous l'impulsion de Florimond Volckaert, considéré comme le " père " du mouvement. Depuis, le Skål International n'a cessé de croître.
Chaque club gère ses activités de manière totalement autonome mais est rattaché d'une part à un comité national, et, d'autre part, au secrétariat général basé en Espagne.
