Since then, the public bodies that are members of Autostrada del Brennero SpA have continued, in the wake of the work of their predecessors, to provide a guarantee of the management quality of the infrastructure. L’autostrada del Brennero, nei suoi 314 km dal Brennero a Modena, è oggi parte integrante del vissuto e dell’identità dei territori che attraversa, utilizzata ogni anno da milioni di persone.
In pochi, forse, ricordano quando l’unica strada disponibile sulla stessa tratta era la statale 12 dell’Abetone e del Brennero, con tutti i suoi limiti, o si soffermano a pensare a che ne sarebbe stato dello sviluppo economico, sociale e culturale dell’Italia se non avesse potuto contare su un’arteria di collegamento con il Nord Europa come l’A22.
Ma la memoria è uno strumento indispensabile per comprendere il valore di ciò che si ha e, nel caso dell’A22, è una memoria che ci riporta al Secondo dopoguerra. Fu allora che i suoi ideatori – la Regione Trentino Alto Adige/Südtirol e le istituzioni delle altre province attraversate – diedero vita ad un progetto cruciale per lo sviluppo del Paese, difendendolo con determinazione nonostante il timido sostegno dello Stato e mettendo in campo energie, risorse economiche e tecniche per portarlo a compimento oltre ogni ostacolo.
Tappe fondamentali dell’impresa furono la costituzione di Autostrada del Brennero SpA il 20 febbraio 1959, la costruzione dell’intera opera in soli dieci anni, dal 1964 al 1974, e il consolidamento aziendale che portò la Società ad ottenere i primi utili di esercizio nel 1984.
Da allora, gli Enti pubblici soci di Autostrada del Brennero SpA hanno proseguito, nel solco dell’operato dei loro predecessori, a costituire una garanzia della qualità gestionale dell’infrastruttura. A22, oggi, costituisce un punto di orgoglio dei territori che attraversa, un patrimonio ricco di risultati ottenuti in termini di sicurezza, di vicinanza alle comunità locali, di progettualità nel segno della mobilità sostenibile e del potenziamento ulteriore del sistema autostradale italiano.
