The Pierre-Simon Laplace Institute (IPSL) was created in 1995 by Gérard Mégie, former president of the CNRS. The IPSL is a research federation which brings together in the Île-de-France region 8 labs and 2 associated teams (CEREA, GEOPS, LATMOS, LISA, LMD, LOCEAN, LSCE, METIS, LERMA, S&R), i.e. nearly 1,400 people, researchers and teacher-researchers, engineers, technicians and administrative agents, doctoral students, post-doctoral students and interns. They rely on the Observatories of Sciences of the Universe in the Ile-de-France region (OVSQ, ECCE TERRA, EFFLUVE, OSUPS).
The role of the IPSL is defined by reference to key scientific themes. These are :
• themes that have the word “climate” in common: studies of natural climate fluctuations and mechanisms, study of past climate changes (paleoclimatology), study of climate changes of anthropogenic origin and their impacts;
• themes linked to the study of major biogeochemical cycles, and concerning the quality of water, air and soil: water cycle of course, but also carbon and greenhouse gas cycles , nitrogen, ozone, pollutants, aerosols in the atmosphere, and bio- and geochemical components in the oceans and on the continents;
• the study of the solar system and its other planets.
IPSL's action makes it possible to address scientific themes that would be difficult to access for each of its laboratories in isolation. To do this, it provides the coordination and assistance necessary for the development of common tools: modeling, observations, data and simulation archives, distribution of this data, websites and communication actions, project management, etc.
IPSL is the winner of the CGI EUR call for tenders. The Climate Graduate School (IPSL-CGS), coordinated by Sorbonne University, involves the entire IPSL community.

L'IPSL est une fédération de recherche qui regroupe en région Île-de-France 8 labos et 2 équipes associées (CEREA, GEOPS, LATMOS, LISA, LMD, LOCEAN, LSCE, METIS, LERMA, S&R), soit près de 1400 personnes, chercheurs et enseignants-chercheurs, ingénieurs, techniciens et agents administratifs, doctorants, post-doctorants et stagiaires. Le rôle de l’IPSL est défini par référence à des thématiques scientifiques clefs. Ce sont :
• des thématiques qui ont en commun le mot « climat » : études des fluctuations et mécanismes climatiques naturels, étude des changements climatiques passés (paléoclimatologie), étude des changements climatiques d’origine anthropique et de leurs impacts ;
• des thématiques liées à l’étude des grands cycles biogéochimiques, et concernant la qualité de l’eau, de l’air et des sols : cycle de l’eau bien sûr, mais aussi cycles du carbone et des gaz à effet de serre, de l’azote, de l’ozone, des polluants, des aérosols dans l’atmosphère, et des composants bio- et géochimiques dans les océans et sur les continents ;
• l’étude du système solaire et de ses autres planètes.
L’action de l’IPSL permet d’aborder des thématiques scientifiques qui seraient d’un accès difficile pour chacun de ses laboratoires isolément. Il apporte pour cela la coordination et l’aide nécessaire au développement d’outils communs : modélisation, observations, archives de données et de simulations, distribution de ces données, sites Web et action de communication, gestion de projets...
L’IPSL est lauréat de l’appel d’offre EUR du CGI. La Climate Graduate School (IPSL-CGS), coordonnée par Sorbonne Université, implique l’ensemble de la communauté IPSL.
