    Biobizkaia is the leading Health Research Institute in the Basque Country, with a consolidated teaching and research track record. Its mission is to promote, unite and support the research groups that make up the Institute to develop quality translational research and promote effective innovation and collaboration with other entities. All of this with the aim of providing new tools, practices and knowledge to contribute to the improvement of health care, the health of the population, the creation of wealth and economic development.

    Biobizkaia was created in 2008, in accordance with the strategy proposed by the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) for the development of Health Research Institutes as organizational structures for the promotion and development of Research in Hospitals, with the aim of promoting biomedical, epidemiological, public health and health services research, scientifically substantiating the programs and policies of the health system and preferentially promoting translational research.

    The Biobizkaia Institute was accredited by the FIS in 1993, and has been participating in the research structures of the Carlos III Health Institute (RETICS, CIBERs and Platforms) since its inception.

    Over the years, the organisational and scientific structure has been configured, as well as developing agreements and conventions for the integration of groups, units and organisations within the Institute. The entities that make up the Institute are: the Department of Health of the Basque Government, the Basque Health Service Osakidetza, the University of the Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (UPV/EHU), the Basque Foundation for Health Innovation and Research BIOEF and the BBK Foundation.

    Biobizkaia es el Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria referente del País Vasco, con una consolidada trayectoria docente e investigadora. Tiene como misión promover, cohesionar y apoyar a los grupos de investigación que conforman el Instituto para desarrollar una investigación traslacional de calidad y potenciar la innovación efectiva y la colaboración con otras entidades. Todo ello con el fin de proporcionar nuevas herramientas, prácticas y conocimiento para contribuir a la mejora de la atención sanitaria, la salud de la población, la creación de riqueza y el desarrollo económico.

    Biobizkaia se crea en el año 2008, de acuerdo a la estrategia propuesta desde el Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) de desarrollo de los Institutos de Investigación Sanitaria como estructuras organizativas de promoción y desarrollo de la Investigación en los Hospitales, con el fin de promover la investigación biomédica, epidemiológica, de salud pública y en servicios sanitarios, fundamentar científicamente los programas y políticas del sistema sanitario y potenciar de forma preferente la investigación traslacional.

    El instituto Biobizkaia fue acreditado por el FIS en 1993, y lleva participando en las estructuras de investigación del Instituto de Salud Carlos III (RETICS, CIBERs y Plataformas), desde sus inicios.

    A lo largo de estos años, se ha ido configurando la estructura organizativa y científica, así como desarrollando acuerdos y convenios para la integración de grupos, unidades y organizaciones dentro del Instituto.
