Leading the next materials leap in quantum computing

C12 is building reliable quantum computers.

The company is a spin-off from ENS launched in January 2020 by twin brothers Matthieu and Pierre Desjardins to supercharge the development of the lab’s promising new quantum technology.

Quantum computing has the potential to change our lives. But frequent errors limit the technology’s viability. We are tackling the fundamental issue: the nature of the hardware itself. We are tapping into the simplest material–carbon–to drive a technological breakthrough in the field. Unlike other quantum computers, we use carbon nanotubes as the fundamental building block of our processor. By combining the power of an ultra-pure material with an easy-to-manufacture semiconductor device, we are building a scalable platform for quantum computing.

Our executive co-founders bring a unique combination of scientific excellence and business skills to the company. Our team is made up of the world’s most accomplished experts in quantum electronics and carbon nanotube science. Our scientific advisors are renowned scientists and pioneers in spin qubits: Dr. Takis Kontos, Dr. Matthieu Delbecq and Dr. Jérémie Viennot.

In June 2021, C12 secured a $10 million seed round with funding from 360 Capital, Bpifrance (Digital Venture Fund), Airbus Ventures, BNP Paribas Développement, and Octave Klaba (OVHcloud), and additional grants from Bpifrance and the Ile-de-France Region.

We are leading quantum’s next material breakthrough, and we are just getting started. Silicon enabled the emergence of classical computing – it’s time for carbon to do the same for quantum !

🌟 At C12, diversity is more than a value—it's essential to how we innovate 🌟

Last week, Juliette Ginies & Pierre Desjardins from our team attended the kick-off event of the PALM (Program to Accelerate Leadership & Mixity) initiative alongside leaders from 31 other companies.

Inspiring speakers like Élisabeth Moreno, Anthony Babkine, Perrine Ferrault (Malt), Virginie Vinson & Boris Paillard (Le Wagon), Adrien CHALTIEL (Men at Work) reminded us why #diversity matters at every level.

With 33% of our team being women, we're proud of our progress, but we know there's always room to grow, especially in achieving greater parity in leadership. Being part of the PALM program is an exciting step towards creating an even more inclusive workplace, not just at C12 but across the tech industry.

Thank you to Bpifrance for driving this important initiative!

“Error rates matter more than qubit count.” That’s what Pierre Desjardins, C12’s CEO, emphasized when sharing his perspective on Google’s latest quantum computing announcement for an article in Le Parisien.

Google’s result with its 105-qubit “Willow” chip is a key moment in the history of #quantum #computing, but Pierre explained:

🔍 "Few players can work with 105 qubits, but this power metric does not measure the progress achieved. Instead, one should look at the error rates in quantum operations."

He also addressed the bigger picture of achieving scalability in quantum computing:

🛠️ We are still far from fault-tolerant quantum computing. Without significantly reducing error rates, adding more qubits is like building a bigger house on a shaky foundation.

As the UN prepares to celebrate 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, it’s an exciting time for the quantum community. At C12, we’re addressing the foundational challenges of quantum computing, focusing on reducing errors and enabling scalable, reliable systems with our carbon nanotube-based approach. Tackling these tough problems is key to making fault-tolerant quantum systems a reality.

👩🔬 Continuing the great initiative by La French Tech, we’re excited to share the story of Gulibusitan Abulizi (Gülbostan Abliz), a talented Quantum Measurement Engineer at C12. #WomenInFrenchTech

Gülbostan’s journey into the #quantum world is one of curiosity and determination. She began her studies in polymer materials science and engineering in China but soon found herself drawn to solid-state physics and nanotechnology.

🌎 Her pursuit of knowledge took her across the globe—from Saudi Arabia to the USA, Netherlands, Turkey, and Switzerland—where she earned two master’s degrees and a PhD at the University of Basel. Her research on carbon nanotube-based nanoelectronic devices opened the door to a career in quantum computing.

At C12, Gülbostan started as a Nanofabrication Scientist in 2020. She quickly became the Nanofabrication Lead, key in establishing a state-of-the-art cleanroom and advancing fabrication processes for carbon nanotube-based qubit devices. Recently, she transitioned to the Measurement team as a Quantum Measurement Engineer, showcasing her adaptability and C12’s commitment to fostering internal mobility and growth.

🎉 Her proudest achievement? 🎉 She successfully pivoted from chemistry to physics during her studies, led a talented nanofabrication team, and set up a world-class cleanroom at C12. She’s also proud of embracing new challenges by transitioning to the Measurement team to expand her expertise.

🚀 If she could go back in time?🚀 Gülbostan wishes she had taken an internship opportunity at the University of New South Wales during her master’s, which could have introduced her to the quantum field earlier. However, her journey shows it’s never too late to make an impact.

Her story shows how curiosity, determination, and a willingness to embrace challenges can lead to incredible opportunities. We hope it inspires more women worldwide to pursue their ambitions in tech and beyond! ✨
