The state of Western democracies has been a central theme in the U.S. election and is also significant in Germany, where the governing coalition has collapsed and securing ruling majorities has become increasingly difficult. With a new administration in Washington and snap elections on the horizon in Germany, we are witnessing shifting political landscapes. As populist movements continue to rise, it begs the questions: Are our democracies truly resilient to these growing threats? Can we afford to take liberal democracies for granted, or is it time to focus on safeguarding these increasingly fragile systems?

Join 1014, the Goethe Institut, and the American Council on Germany (ACG) for a conversation with Prof. Dr. Dr. Alexander Görlach, expert on liberal democracies and Adjunct Professor at NYU, and Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook, German political scientist to explore current trends and discuss the future of democracy.

Migration played a pivotal role in the U.S. elections, and it looms prominently in political debates in Germany ahead of elections next month. Join the American Council on Germany and 1014 this Wednesday, January 15th, for a discussion with Victoria Rietig, the Head of the Center for Migration at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) and Molly O'Toole, Pulitzer-winning journalist. Earlier this month, we were joined by world renowned composers Craig Urquhart, Sergei Newsky, Konstantia Gourzi, and Tamar Muskal for a moderated discussion with Sophia Zhou. The conversation explored identity in our globalized world, highlighting the composers' cultural origins and broader global contexts, followed by a captivating concert performance.

We would like to thank Craig, Sergei, Konstantia, and Tomar, as well as the musicians from The Julliard School, for sharing their perspectives and talent with us. We would also like to thank Sophia for moderating, Alexander Polzin for curating the evening, the Leo Baeck Institute – New York | Berlin for their collaboration, The Halle Foundation (Atlanta) and the Friends of Freiburg Alumni North America for their generous sponsorship, and The Center for Jewish History for hosting us.

A recording of the discussion and concert is now available on our website: https://lnkd.in/e2Yq9cUB
