A la fois Association de loi 1901 et Entreprise d'Insertion (dite AEI), Book Hémisphères collecte, trie, puis redistribue des livres d'occasion de tous genres et de tous types. Elle est à ce titre un acteur de l'économie sociale et solidaire (dite ESS).
Elle a une triple vocation :
* solidaire et sociale : outre ses deux permanents, la structure embauche d'ores et déjà deux salariés en contrat d'insertion à temps plein en tant que « trieurs de livres », et elle ambitionne de s'agrandir dès 2011.
* humanitaire et culturelle : en tant que plate-forme spécialiste du tri de livres, Book Hémisphères souhaite s'associer à différents projets et organisations nécessitant la fourniture de livres et ayant pour but de favoriser l'accès à la culture pour tous.
* environnementale : les livres trop usagés sont orientés vers une autre entreprise d'insertion partenaire, qui collecte le vieux papier destiné à être transformé en pâte à papier.
