La Croce Rossa Italiana, Associazione senza fini di lucro con prerogative di carattere internazionale, ha per scopo l'assistenza sanitaria e sociale sia in tempo di pace sia in tempo di conflitto. La Croce Rossa Italiana è riconosciuta dalla Repubblica Italiana con il decreto legislativo 28 settembre 2012, n. 178 quale Società volontaria di soccorso ed assistenza, ausiliaria dei poteri pubblici in campo umanitario, in conformità alle Convenzioni di Ginevra ed ai successivi Protocolli aggiuntivi, e quale unica Società Nazionale della Croce Rossa autorizzata ad esplicare le sue attività sul territorio italiano. La Croce Rossa Italiana gode, nei confronti dei poteri pubblici, di un’autonomia tale da permetterle di adempiere alla propria missione e di agire in ogni circostanza secondo i Principi Fondamentali del Movimento Internazionale di Croce Rossa e Mezzaluna Rossa. I poteri pubblici rispettano in ogni circostanza l’osservanza della Croce Rossa Italiana ai Principi Fondamentali. La Croce Rossa Italiana è un’associazione di interesse pubblico, posta sotto l’alto Patronato del Presidente della Repubblica.
