The Thau Basin Agglomeration Community, born on January 1, 2017 from the merger between Thau agglo and the CCNBT (Communauté de communes du Nord Bassin de Thau) has been renamed “Sète agglopôle Méditerranée” since September 2017.
The 2nd largest urban area in Hérault after Montpellier, it brings together 14 municipalities and nearly 125,000 inhabitants. La Communauté d’agglomération du bassin de Thau, née au 1er janvier 2017 de la fusion entre Thau agglo et la CCNBT (Communauté de communes du Nord Bassin de Thau) a été rebaptisée « Sète agglopôle méditerranée » depuis septembre 2017.
2ème agglomération de l’Hérault après celle de Montpellier, elle regroupe 14 communes et près de 125 000 habitants. Cette coopération trouve ses fondements dans un environnement remarquable, des activités maritimes et lagunaires, des échanges à la fois économiques et culturels très denses, ainsi qu’une histoire depuis longtemps partagée.
Les finalités d’un tel regroupement sont très concrètes : il s’agit d’apporter aux habitants du territoire de nombreux services publics (collecte et tri, transport, médiathèques...), de réaliser des équipements ou de conduire des projets de développement.
L’intercommunalité permet, en effet, de faire des économies d’échelle et de mieux répartir les coûts. Dernier intérêt et non le moindre, elle suscite un esprit de solidarité et d’égalité entre les communes membres. Ces enjeux sont immédiatement visibles et sensibles sur un territoire comme celui de Thau, constitué à plus de 80% d’espaces naturels ou agricoles.
