Elle a apporté une contribution directe au développement économique de la France au XIXème siècle dans les domaines allant des premiers réseaux de chemins de fer à la création des premières infrastructures de production et de distribution d’énergie. Son action a été déterminante en matière de brevets et de normalisation. Elle a été le précurseur de l’ANVAR, de l’INPI, d’OSEO et du Laboratoire National d’Essais.
La Société d’Encouragement a établi son siège dès 1852, 4 place Saint Germain-de-Prés à Paris dans le 6ème, face à l’église abbatiale de Saint Germain-de-Prés. L’Hôtel de l’Industrie a été aménagé pour accueillir ses membres éminents et également exposer des inventions. C’est dans une de ces salles par exemple, que les frères Lumière firent leur première projection, acte fondateur en 1895 de l’industrie du cinéma.
