L'Office français de la biodiversité a été créé le 1er janvier 2020 pour protéger et restaurer la biodiversité (Loi n°2019-773 du 24 juillet 2019). L’établissement public est placé sous la tutelle du ministère de la Transition écologique et du ministère de l’Agriculture et de l’Alimentation.
Il regroupe les agents de l’Agence française pour la biodiversité (AFB) et de l’Office national de la chasse et de la faune sauvage (ONCFS). Il exerce des missions d’appui à la mise en œuvre des politiques publiques dans les domaines de la connaissance, la préservation, la gestion et la restauration de la biodiversité des milieux terrestres, aquatiques et marins. Il vient en appui aux acteurs publics mais travaille également en partenariat étroit avec les acteurs socio-économiques. L'Office a aussi vocation à aller à la rencontre du public pour mobiliser les citoyens en faveur de la biodiversité.
En matière d’espaces protégés, il gère notamment les parcs naturels marins et le sanctuaire de mammifères marins Agoa aux Antilles. Il est opérateur et animateur de sites Natura 2000 en mer. Les parcs nationaux de France sont rattachés à l’Office, des synergies fortes sont mises en place avec eux. L'Office est également impliqué (gestion ou co-gestion) dans 27 réserves de faune sauvage.
