For the past 70 years, researchers and students from all different countries and backgrounds have elected the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) as their academic home, drawn by the pairing of in-depth analysis of the past and research explicitly devoted to understanding contemporary societies. Thanks to our global perspective and research-based learning, the EHESS has been an incubator in the social sciences; from the Annales to French theory to Thomas Piketty's historical analysis of modern capitalism, we have played a central role in the emergence of numerous paradigms in the social sciences and humanities. With over a thousand seminars per year, this institution, built upon the work of its professors such as Fernand Braudel, Pierre Bourdieu, Jacques Derrida, Françoise Héritier or Claude Lévi-Strauss to name a few, stands at the heart of French and international intellectual life.

L'École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), est issue de la transformation, en 1975, de la sixième section de l'École pratique des hautes études, section de sciences économiques et sociales, fondée en 1947 par Lucien Febvre, Charles Morazé et Fernand Braudel. L'École forme des docteurs dans toutes les disciplines des sciences humaines et sociales (histoire, anthropologie, sociologie, économie, géographie, linguistique, psychologie et sciences du langage, démographie, sciences de la cognition, science politique, philosophie et mathématiques).
Avec 300 enseignants-chercheurs, 500 chercheurs, 450 ingénieurs et techniciens, 3 000 étudiants, l'EHESS est une institution à forte vocation internationale. Entretenant des liens conventionnels avec une vaste constellation d'universités à travers le monde, elle accueille chaque année 150 professeurs étrangers invités, et la moitié de ses étudiants vient d'au-delà des frontières nationales. Sa capacité d'accueil et d'encadrement doctoral et post-doctoral, et le nombre de ses chercheurs publiants la désignent comme l'un des principaux pôles de recherche en sciences sociales en Europe.
