    The CRIOBE - Centre for Island Research and Environmental Observatory - is one of France’s preeminent laboratories for the study of coral reef ecosystems. It is a research laboratory with more than 70 staff, including academic professors, research scientists and administrative and technical personnel from three of France’s premiere research institutions - École Pratique des Hautes Études (EPHE), the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the University of Perpignan Via Domitia (UPVD) – that together form the CRIOBE USR 3278 research unit. The CRIOBE falls under the prestigious umbrella of the PSL (Paris Sciences & Letters) Research University.

    CRIOBE’s activities span multiple disciplines : ecology, conservation biology, genetics, chemistry and anthropology and its laboratories are spread across two main campuses : the University of Perpignan (UPVD) in the south of France and the CRIOBE research station located on the island of Moorea, French Polynesia.

    Specifically, scientists at the CRIOBE focus on the following three principle areas of research:

    1. Molecular Genetics. An integrative approach for the study of coral reefs.
    2. Biology of populations, chemical ecology and ecosystem interactions on coral reefs.
    3. Function and governance of socio-ecosystems.

    Le CRIOBE est l’un des plus éminents laboratoires français pour l’étude des écosystèmes coralliens. Depuis 2010, le CRIOBE pilote le Laboratoire d’Excellence CORAIL (LABEX) qui rassemble 9 institutions et 4 universités d’outre-mer.

    Créé en 1971, le CRIOBE est, depuis 2013, une unité de recherche et de services du CNRS qui associe des enseignants-chercheurs, des chercheurs et des personnels administratifs et techniques appartenant au CNRS, à l'EPHE et à l'UPVD. Ses activités s’exercent à travers de multiples disciplines - l'écologie, la génétique, la chimie - sur deux sites géographiques principaux, le campus de l’Université de Perpignan en France et la station de terrain sur l’île de Moorea en Polynésie Française.

    Chercheurs, enseignants-chercheurs, ingénieurs, techniciens et personnel administratif travaillent ensemble pour faire avancer 3 domaines principaux:

    Du gène à la molécule: une approche intégrative pour l'étude des récifs coralliens
    Biologie des populations, écologie chimique et les interactions au sein des écosystèmes
    Fonctionnement et gouvernance des socio-écosystèmes

    L'Éducation
    Le CRIOBE participe aussi à la formation: l'enseignement universitaire de licence et master à l’EPHE ou à l’Université de Perpignan, la formation à la recherche en doctorat de l'EPHE et de l'Université de Perpignan ou par le diplôme propre de l'EPHE.

    Le CRIOBE est sous la direction du Dr Serge Planes (CNRS-EPHE).
