3 years agoFireSmart is committed to helping Canadians reduce wildfire risk and build resilient communities. #IAmFireSmart
Since the early 1990s, the Partners in Protection Association (PiP) has maintained a mandate to reduce the risk that wildfires pose to populated areas, by facilitating interagency cooperation to promote education and awareness. The association has over 60 member organizations across Canada, including representatives from eight provinces and territories, and such international partners as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). This wide network of members and partners across Canada and the United States, positions PiP to continue delivering its mandate and promoting fire safety in the wildland/urban interface (WUI).
The flagship program for PiP is FireSmart® Canada. Created in 1993, FireSmart® and the FireSmart logo are registered Trademarks of Partners in Protection Association.
The FireSmart® brand is tied to a variety of wildfire safety and protection guidebooks and technical manuals used across Canada and internationally; the FireSmart® Community Recognition Program; and a variety of training materials, workshops, and conferences. FireSmart® Canada is supported and has been adopted by members across Canada, such as the BC Wildfire Service, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, the Government of Yukon, and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.
As wildfires continue to cause major disruptions to urban areas – the Fort McMurray wildfire in May 2016 prompted the largest evacuation in Alberta’s history – PiP’s mandate and FireSmart® programs across the country area remain as relevant and necessary today as they have ever been.
