Graphitech is a joint venture between EDF Cyclife and Veolia Nuclear Solutions
Graphitech is an engineering company in charge of technological development and engineering studies required in preparation for decommissioning nuclear reactors that use graphite technology (UNGG, Magnox, AGR, RBMK)
Formed through a partnership between EDF and Veolia, Graphitech joint-venture combines EDF’s nuclear industry expertise and decommissioning engineering know-how with Veolia’s nuclear environment robotics capability to enable the design of specialised machinery and long distance intervention platforms for decommissioning.
Graphitech will use its expertise to develop remote-operation tools to break up complex, large-scale concrete and metal structures, and tools to extract activated graphite bricks and piles, as well as design systems and articulated arms to enable deployment of these tools.
Graphitech’s first objective is to provide EDF with an optimized scenario for decommissioning the Chinon A2 reactor in 2028 and to offer a testing program to evaluate the technological solutions needed to complete the operation.
Around 60 of the world’s reactor use graphite technology and are to be decommissioned. Graphitech will thus be ready to meet the needs of France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Lithuania and Japan.

Filiale d’EDF et de Veolia, Graphitech associe la maîtrise de l’industrie nucléaire et les compétences d’ingénierie de démantèlement d’EDF avec les compétences de robotique en environnement nucléaire de Veolia, permettant la conception de machines spéciales et de plateformes d’intervention à distance pour le démantèlement.
Graphitech apporte son expertise sur le développement d’outils télé-opérés de découpe de structures en béton et métal, complexes et de grandes dimensions et d’outils d’extraction des briques/empilements de graphite activés, ainsi que sur le design des systèmes et des bras articulés qui permettront de déployer ces outils.
Le premier objectif de Graphitech est de livrer à EDF un scénario optimisé pour le démantèlement du réacteur de Chinon A2 en 2028 et de proposer un programme d’essais qui permettra de tester les solutions technologiques nécessaires à la réalisation des opérations.
Graphitech a pour vocation de répondre aux besoins de démantèlement des quelques 60 réacteurs au graphite existants dans le monde, en France, mais aussi au Royaume Uni, en Espagne, en Italie, en Lituanie et au Japon.
