Destiné à tous, le Mémorial évoque le quotidien des Alsaciens-Mosellans de 1870 à 1945, et l'Europe.
Surplombant la vallée de la Bruche dans son écrin de verdure, le vaste bâtiment à la façade de verre du Mémorial s’élance fièrement vers le ciel.
En son cœur, les méandres de l’Histoire régionale, la vie quotidienne de milliers d’hommes, de femmes, d’enfants, y sont racontés, expliqués, illustrés, mis en lumière par des décors immersifs, des documents et des vidéos, sans qu’aucune image ou scène violente ne vienne choquer le visiteur.
Par une architecture et une scénographie exceptionnelles, le Mémorial Alsace–Moselle transmet non seulement l’histoire souvent mal connue, mal comprise, d’une région ballottée d’un pays à l’autre, au gré d’une frontière fluctuante, mais il ouvre aussi à une réflexion sur la tolérance, le changement de nationalité, de culture, le sentiment d’identité européenne aussi. Sur 3000 m2, cet équipement culturel dévoile une période floue qui, de 1870 aux lendemains de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, pèse encore sur l’identité de toute une région. Puis, parce que de la réconciliation franco-allemande a pu naître l’Europe d’aujourd’hui,
