    The Spanish agri-food sector represented close to 100,000 million euros in 2018, a value that represents 9.2% of the total economy (2018 data). In Catalonia this sector represents 16.28% of GDP with a value of 38,205 million (2017 data).

    Despite being one of the most attractive sectors for investment around the world, the number of farms decreases year after year, and in some sectors such as horticulture, close to 70% of cultivated land has been lost.

    The agri-food sector is in many respects, even now, an under-technological sector. However, the growing demand for food, such as consumer demand for healthier and more environmentally friendly food (especially in countries with advanced economies), requires strong innovation. This must happen, through a high level of technology, in the production process, but also in the process of transformation, transport and sale of food.

    The aim of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya is to identify opportunities and solutions that will surely go through innovation, research and the effective transfer of knowledge in the field of #Agrotech.

    El sector agroalimentari espanyol va representar vora els 100.000 milions d’euros l’any 2018, valor que representa el 9,2% del total de l’economia (dades 2018). A Catalunya aquest sector representa el 16,28 % del PIB amb un valor de 38.205 milions (dades 2017).

    Malgrat ser un dels sectors més atractius per a la inversió arreu del món, el nombre d’explotacions decreix any rere any, i en algun dels sectors com el hortícola, s’ha perdut prop del 70% de les terres cultivades.

    El sector agroalimentari, és en molts aspectes, encara ara, un sector poc tecnificat. No obstant tant la creixent demanda d’aliments, com l’exigència del consumidor per aliments més sans i més respectuosos amb el medi ambient (especialment en països d’economies avançades), exigeix una forta innovació. Aquesta ha de passar, per un alt nivell de tecnificació, en el procés productiu, però també en el procés de transformació, transport i venda dels aliments.

    L’objectiu de la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya és identificar oportunitats i solucions que de ben segur passaran per la innovació, la recerca i la transferència efectiva del coneixement en l'àmbit #Agrotech.
