The National Institute for Astrophysics is the main Italian research body for the study of the Universe. INAF is also one of the few institutions in the world to possess the intellectual and instrumental resources to observe the universe at all wavelengths, from the ground and from space, covering the entire electromagnetic spectrum (from gamma rays to radio waves).
The National Institute for Astrophysics promotes, carries out and coordinates, also within the framework of European Union and international organizations, research activities in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics, both in collaboration with universities and with other public and private, national, international and foreign entities.
INAF designs and develops innovative technologies and cutting-edge instrumentation for the study and exploration of the Cosmos. Finally, it promotes the diffusion of scientific culture thanks to projects of teaching and dissemination of Astronomy that are aimed at School and Society: workshops, seminars, astronomy lessons and participation in science festivals throughout Italy and abroad. These activities are promoted either by the Headquarters or by local structures in collaboration with educational organizations and local authorities.

L’Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica è il principale Ente di Ricerca italiano per lo studio dell’Universo. INAF è, inoltre, uno dei pochi enti al mondo a possedere al suo interno le risorse intellettuali e strumentali per osservare l’universo a tutte le lunghezze d’onda, da terra e dallo spazio, coprendo l’intero spettro elettromagnetico (dai raggi gamma alle onde radio).
L’Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica promuove, realizza e coordina, anche nell'ambito di programmi dell'Unione Europea e di Organismi internazionali, attività di ricerca nei campi dell’astronomia e dell’astrofisica, sia in collaborazione con le Università che con altri soggetti pubblici e privati, nazionali, internazionali ed esteri.
INAF progetta e sviluppa tecnologie innovative e strumentazione d’avanguardia per lo studio e l’esplorazione del Cosmo. Favorisce, infine, la diffusione della cultura scientifica grazie a progetti di didattica e divulgazione dell’Astronomia che si rivolgono alla Scuola e alla Società: workshop, seminari, lezioni di astronomia e partecipazione a festival della scienza su tutto il territorio italiano e all'estero. Tali attività sono promosse o dalla Sede centrale o dalle strutture locali in collaborazione con le organizzazioni educative e gli enti locali.
