Het Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg (ZOL) is het resultaat van de fusie tussen het A. Dumontziekenhuis in Waterschei, het Sint-Barbaraziekenhuis in Lanaken en het Sint-Jansziekenhuis in Genk. Deze fusie, die plaats had op 31 december 1995, was een logisch gevolg van de nauwe samenwerking sinds 1992 tussen de ziekenhuizen. Op 1 januari 2021 fuseerde het ZOL met het Ziekenhuis Maas en Kempen in Maaseik.
