Founded 1963. One of the largest, most successful and established sports clubs at the University of York.
Founded in 1963 the University of York Boat Club is housed on the River Ouse in Fulford, a mere 10 minutes from the campus itself. The club is comprised of five squads, four of which compete at various levels from local grassroot regattas to events including Henley Royal and Head of the River. Our community squad allows staff and students alike to row recreationally. UYBC is also a GB World Class Start centre allowing exceptional members to pursue their rowing career at the highest levels.
We are lucky enough that our boat house is situated less than 10 minutes from campus, complete with a large boat bay, multiple changing rooms, warm showers, a clubroom equipped with a small kitchenette and also ergs. We currently have a large fleet of boats including two Filippi VIII+’s, a men’s Empacher VIII, and Empacher IV and 2Xs.
We are able to use these boats on an unbroken 23 km stretch of the River Ouse that winds through idyllic countryside and the ancient city of York itself. This area is perfect for training, with many straights, and enough width for side by side racing.
We also have access to an erg room, strength and conditioning suite, and cardio facilities with our membership.
We compete at national events such as BUCS Regatta, Henley Women’s and Henley Royal Regatta, as well as regional events such as Peterborough and Met Regattas and North of England Head. We organise White Rose Head and White Rose Regatta every season, and take part in the annual ‘Roses’ tournament against Lancaster. We also continue training through the summer taking part in smaller more local grassroot competitions
Further facilities include York Sport Centre, York Sport Village, Cycle and Running routes and the Hes East Swimming Pool.
We have a strong, dedicated team of volunteer coaches who spend copious time with our athletes on the water, in the erg room and at video analysis sessions.
