Lo que en el año 2.003 se constituyó como la Asociación de Directores de Producción Cinematográfica de España (ADPCE), destinada a velar por el funcionamiento de la labor profesional de la figura del director de producción en la cinematografía española, desde enero de 2.008 ha visto la necesidad de ampliar su marco de actuación, en respuesta a las necesidades del sector audiovisual, y pasó así a constituirse como una Asociación de Profesionales de la Producción Audiovisual (APPA), en la que tienen cabida tanto profesionales provenientes del mundo de la televisión, como de publicidad, y los del cine ya existentes.
Aunque, de momento, casi todos los miembros que conforman la Asociación son profesionales provenientes del mundo del cine, cada vez son más los profesionales que ven solapado su trabajo con sectores relacionados con la televisión y la publicidad, motivo por el cual se han interesado en formar parte de una Asociación que mantenga y vele por la organización dentro de su industria. Es por ello, que en APPA hablamos ya de profesionales de la producción audiovisual.
