Son fondateur est Richard Heidmann, ingénieur en propulsion spatiale, qui a participé au congrès de fondation de la Mars Society en août 1998 et qui est membre du Steering Committee de la Mars Society. Il en a été son président pendant plus de dix ans avant de céder sa place à Alain Souchier, également ingénieur en propulsion spatiale. Depuis 2018, son président est Philippe Clermont.
